Nexi: sovereignty score and 8 European alternatives

Nexi is an Italian payments company serving merchants, banks and public administration. For merchants it provides point-of-sale terminals, including SoftPOS on a phone, cash-register systems and e-commerce tools such as XPay and XShop, supplemented by services such as pay-by-link, buy now pay later and dynamic currency conversion. For banks and corporates Nexi offers card issuing, with web and mobile apps for managing cards, and it handles card acquiring for merchants. The services are delivered as terminals, apps and online platforms.

Nexi S.p.A. is based in Milan, Italy, and listed on Borsa Italiana. Its shareholders include Evergood H&F Lux S.à.r.l. and Cassa Depositi e Prestiti. Since January 2022 Nexi, Nets and Sia have formed Nexi Group, which also includes Nets and Przelewy24. Nexi is not open source and the service is operated by the vendor itself. For a European organisation this means payment processing sits with a European company, but that terminals, acquiring and card issuing remain dependent on a single large group.

Why digital sovereignty matters with Nexi

Nexi is headquartered in IT and therefore falls under European law: the GDPR, NIS2 and the Data Act. No foreign legislation can compel access to your data.

Data is hosted exclusively in the EU, so Nexi scores best on data residency.

Nexi is closed source and hosted by the vendor. The encryption keys and the runtime sit with the vendor and switching requires data migration. Ask about bring-your-own-key, export options and open standards.

What this means for your organisation depends on your whole stack and context. The free assessment weighs Nexi together with your other vendors and gives a total score, a heatmap and the main risk drivers.
