Nhost is a managed backend platform positioned as an open source alternative to Firebase. It combines a PostgreSQL database, an instant GraphQL API (based on Hasura), authentication, file storage, serverless functions in JavaScript or TypeScript, and the option to run custom containers. Developers deploy with Git and built-in CI/CD, work locally with the Nhost CLI and manage projects in a dashboard. The platform is delivered as a cloud service.
The data controller is Nhost AB, with a Swedish address. The code is published on GitHub under the MIT licence, and according to the project the whole Nhost stack can be self-hosted, for example with Docker Compose. In the managed cloud, data is hosted with Amazon Web Services (AWS), the only sub-processor listed, and the customer chooses the region. AWS is a US company, so choosing a European region is necessary to keep data inside the EEA. The privacy policy says international transfers outside the EEA are not planned, except for storage purposes. Self-hosting gives European organisations full control over location and operation.
