Nubus: sovereignty score and 8 European alternatives

Nubus is an open-source identity and access management platform from Univention. It combines a central directory for users, groups and roles with single sign-on through protocols such as OpenID Connect and SAML, optional multi-factor authentication, and a portal where staff find the applications they may use and manage their own accounts. A REST API and SCIM connect further applications. Nubus is delivered as software for Kubernetes or as a virtual machine based on Univention Corporate Server (UCS).

Univention GmbH is based in Bremen, Germany, and develops Nubus. The source code is open source under the AGPL-3.0. You run Nubus yourself, on your own servers, in a private cloud or through a service provider of your choice, so identity data stays under your control. Univention also offers support and service-level agreements. Nubus is also the identity component of openDesk, the sovereign workplace for public administrations. It is not a SaaS service run by the vendor itself.

Why digital sovereignty matters with Nubus

Nubus is headquartered in DE and therefore falls under European law: the GDPR, NIS2 and the Data Act. No foreign legislation can compel access to your data.

Data is hosted exclusively in the EU, so Nubus scores best on data residency.

Nubus is open source. You can audit the source code, self-host the software and keep the encryption keys under your own control. Switching is easier because data and software are not tied to a single party.

What this means for your organisation depends on your whole stack and context. The free assessment weighs Nubus together with your other vendors and gives a total score, a heatmap and the main risk drivers.
