Ontrack EasyRecovery: sovereignty score and 8 European alternatives

Ontrack EasyRecovery is data recovery software from Ontrack, the recovery brand of KLDiscovery. Ontrack's website lists versions for Windows, Mac and iPhone, plus a photo edition. The software is installed on the user's own computer and is intended for restoring lost or deleted files. Besides software, Ontrack also offers laboratory-based recovery services under the same brand.

The operating entity named on the website is KLDiscovery Ontrack, LLC, a US company; the organisation lists both Eden Prairie (Minnesota) and McLean (Virginia) as locations. The vendor is therefore subject to US law, including the CLOUD Act. Its privacy policy refers to data processing agreements, EU standard contractual clauses and certification under the EU-US Data Privacy Framework; it does not state where data is hosted. Because recovery runs locally on your own device, recovered files in principle stay on your own system when you use the software. Keep the vendor's US jurisdiction in mind for account data and when engaging laboratory services.

Why digital sovereignty matters with Ontrack EasyRecovery

Ontrack EasyRecovery is headquartered in the United States. US vendors fall under the CLOUD Act and FISA 702: US authorities can compel access to data, even when that data sits in a European data centre. That is the core of the jurisdictional exposure in our model.

Ontrack EasyRecovery runs on infrastructure you choose and control yourself. You decide where the data lives, including fully within the EU if you want — this is not a fixed hosting choice made by the vendor.

Ontrack EasyRecovery is closed source, but you run the software yourself on your own infrastructure. The encryption keys and the runtime therefore stay under your own control, though you cannot audit or modify the source code. Ask about export options and open standards to limit software-level lock-in.

What this means for your organisation depends on your whole stack and context. The free assessment weighs Ontrack EasyRecovery together with your other vendors and gives a total score, a heatmap and the main risk drivers.
