OpenLDAP is an open source implementation of the Lightweight Directory Access Protocol (LDAP). The suite includes slapd, a stand-alone LDAP server daemon, lloadd, an LDAP load balancer, the LDAP protocol libraries, and utilities, tools and sample clients. Organisations use it as a central directory for users, groups and credentials against which other systems can authenticate. It is software that you install and operate yourself, on your own servers or in the cloud.
OpenLDAP is released under the OpenLDAP Public License, a BSD-style open source licence. The project is coordinated by the OpenLDAP Foundation, a not-for-profit corporation, and Symas funds and hosts the website. Because OpenLDAP is a self-hosted component rather than a hosted service, the project holds no customer data: where the directory data sits depends entirely on where you choose to run the server. A European organisation can keep it in its own datacentre or in an EU cloud region, and can review the source code independently.
