PixiEditor: sovereignty score and 8 European alternatives

PixiEditor is a 2D graphics editor for pixel art, painting, vector work and animation. It offers a dedicated pixel-art toolset with advanced palette management and a pixel-perfect pen mode, and supports frame-by-frame animation. It is aimed at game developers, illustrators and hobbyists who create sprites, icons or logos. According to the project's website it is a desktop application that works offline; it can be downloaded directly and is also available through the Microsoft Store, Steam and Flathub.

PixiEditor is developed by Pixi Labs Sp. z o.o., a Polish company in Międzyświeć. The source code is published on GitHub under the LGPL-3.0 licence, so you can inspect and build the software yourself. Because it runs locally on your own computer, your files stay there as well; the project's website describes no mandatory cloud service or account. The website does offer a newsletter sign-up that asks for an email address. For European organisations it is an open-source alternative to commercial pixel-art editors from outside Europe.

Why digital sovereignty matters with PixiEditor

PixiEditor is headquartered in PL and therefore falls under European law: the GDPR, NIS2 and the Data Act. No foreign legislation can compel access to your data.

Data is hosted exclusively in the EU, so PixiEditor scores best on data residency.

PixiEditor is open source. You can audit the source code, self-host the software and keep the encryption keys under your own control. Switching is easier because data and software are not tied to a single party.

What this means for your organisation depends on your whole stack and context. The free assessment weighs PixiEditor together with your other vendors and gives a total score, a heatmap and the main risk drivers.
