Planio: sovereignty score and 8 European alternatives

Planio is an online project management service that provides hosted Redmine, Subversion and Git as a turnkey offering with no installation. It covers issue tracking with role-based configurable workflows, agile tools such as sprint planning and kanban boards, milestones and Gantt charts, version control, a help desk, file sync, wikis, forums and chat. Mobile apps for iOS and Android are also available. Planio is based on Redmine, which is itself open source software.

Planio is provided by Planio GmbH in Berlin, which describes itself as a company by LAUNCH. According to the vendor, all customer data is stored with Hetzner Online GmbH in the German Vogtland region, with backups in a second data centre in Frankfurt. A self-hosted edition of Planio itself is not described. For European organisations this means a hosted service from a German company with storage in Germany, while the underlying Redmine technology is open, which can make a later move to self-managed operation easier.

Why digital sovereignty matters with Planio

Planio is headquartered in DE and therefore falls under European law: the GDPR, NIS2 and the Data Act. No foreign legislation can compel access to your data.

Data is hosted exclusively in the EU, so Planio scores best on data residency.

Planio is closed source and hosted by the vendor. The encryption keys and the runtime sit with the vendor and switching requires data migration. Ask about bring-your-own-key, export options and open standards.

What this means for your organisation depends on your whole stack and context. The free assessment weighs Planio together with your other vendors and gives a total score, a heatmap and the main risk drivers.
