Plasma Mobile: sovereignty score and 8 European alternatives

Plasma Mobile is an open-source shell for Linux smartphones and tablets, built on the technology of the KDE Plasma desktop. It provides a home screen, status bar, task panel, lock screen and settings, designed for touch use on mobile hardware. It is an alternative to the interface of Android and iOS. The software is installed on a Linux system on a supported device and is not offered as a hosted service.

The project is developed by the KDE community, and legal and financial matters are handled by KDE e.V., an association with its address in Berlin, Germany. The source code is published under GPL-2.0-or-later and LGPL-2.1-or-later, so an organisation can inspect, build and modify it on its own infrastructure. Because no vendor runs a cloud service around the shell, no foreign provider holds user data through it. A European organisation should mainly check which distribution and device image it uses and who maintains that image.

Why digital sovereignty matters with Plasma Mobile

Plasma Mobile is headquartered in DE and therefore falls under European law: the GDPR, NIS2 and the Data Act. No foreign legislation can compel access to your data.

Data is hosted exclusively in the EU, so Plasma Mobile scores best on data residency.

Plasma Mobile is open source. You can audit the source code, self-host the software and keep the encryption keys under your own control. Switching is easier because data and software are not tied to a single party.

What this means for your organisation depends on your whole stack and context. The free assessment weighs Plasma Mobile together with your other vendors and gives a total score, a heatmap and the main risk drivers.
