Linux Mint is a community-developed desktop Linux distribution that aims to work out of the box, including multimedia support, and to need little maintenance. The main editions use the Cinnamon, MATE or Xfce desktops and are based on Ubuntu; Cinnamon was developed by the Mint team. LMDE, Linux Mint Debian Edition, is based on Debian instead. You install Mint from a downloaded image on your own hardware.
The project was started in 2006 by the French developer Clément Lefèbvre. Ireland's company register lists Linux Mint Limited, set up in 2013, and the project's privacy statement says donation records are shared with the Irish tax authorities. The software is open source, mainly under the GPL. According to the privacy statement, the project's websites use services such as PayPal, Stripe, Google Analytics on some pages and Google AdSense, and the project states that it complies with the GDPR. Data you process on Mint stays on your own systems.
