postmarketOS is a free operating system for smartphones based on Alpine Linux. Since September 2026 the project has been called Nura. It supports several user interfaces, including GNOME, KDE, Phosh and Sxmo. The project aims to give smartphones a ten-year lifecycle and to run the mainline Linux kernel on all phones instead of outdated Android-specific kernels. It also aims to support Android apps through Waydroid. The system is installed as an image on supported devices and is intended for people and organisations that want to manage their phone themselves.
The software is open source and developed by a community. The source code has moved from GitHub to a GitLab instance and later to the project's own server. Because the operating system runs locally on the device and requires no supplier service, a European organisation keeps control over updates and data. Older references to the name postmarketOS remain in use for the time being.
