ReactOS is a free and open-source operating system that aims to be binary-compatible with programs and device drivers written for Windows, from Windows Server 2003 onwards. It runs on i586 and amd64 PCs and is written mainly in C. The project describes its mission as running Windows apps and drivers in an open-source environment. ReactOS is downloaded and installed on your own hardware or in a virtual machine. Wikipedia still describes it as feature-incomplete alpha software, recommended mainly for evaluation and testing, although many Windows applications run on it.
The code is released under GPL-2.0-or-later, with some parts under the LGPL and BSD licences. It is developed by the ReactOS Team and contributors. The website is operated by ReactOS Deutschland e.V., a German registered charitable association in Rheda-Wiedenbrück. According to the project, the operating system does not collect personal data. The website is hosted by an external provider under a data processing agreement and uses Google reCAPTCHA. For European organisations it is mainly an open alternative that you can inspect entirely yourself.
