Upsun (formerly Platform.sh): sovereignty score and 8 European alternatives

Platform.sh was renamed Upsun in September 2025. It is a cloud application platform that drives deployment from Git: each branch can get a full preview environment, and actions run through the CLI, console or API. It supports many frameworks and CMSs, including Django, Next.js, Drupal, WordPress and Laravel, and offers zero-downtime scaling, monitoring and security and compliance controls. The existing plan-based model is now called Upsun Fixed. It is a commercial SaaS service.

The company is headquartered in Paris, France, spun out of SensioLabs in 2015, and says it is privately owned and not part of any major cloud corporation. Customers choose the cloud and region themselves: Upsun runs on AWS, Google Cloud, Azure and OVHcloud. European regions include Germany, Ireland, Sweden and France, but regions in the US, the United Kingdom, Switzerland, Canada and Australia are also offered. Many regions therefore run on US hyperscalers; an organisation that wants strong European sovereignty should deliberately choose a French OVHcloud region or another EU region.

Upsun (formerly Platform.sh) hosts data in EU, CH, US, OTHER. Exactly what stays within the EU — and what does not — is defined by the vendor's data processing agreement and sub-processor list, not by a setting you control yourself; check those documents for the precise scope, including backups, logs and support access.

Upsun (formerly Platform.sh) is closed source and hosted by the vendor. The encryption keys and the runtime sit with the vendor and switching requires data migration. Ask about bring-your-own-key, export options and open standards.
