Plex is media server and streaming software developed by Plex, Inc., an American software and media streaming company. Users organise their own films, series, music and photos on a server and play them through apps on televisions, phones, computers and other devices. The service also offers live TV and films. The Plex Media Server can run on hardware the user controls, including Windows, macOS, Linux, NAS devices and Docker.
Plex, Inc. is headquartered in California, United States, and is therefore subject to US law, including the CLOUD Act for data it controls. When the media server runs on a European organisation's own hardware, the media files stay on its own infrastructure. Account, remote-access and other online features, however, rely on services operated by the vendor. The product is not open source. Organisations that prioritise digital sovereignty should weigh the local server option against the vendor-operated account services.
