Windchill is a product lifecycle management (PLM) solution from PTC. It is web-based software that gives access to product information such as mechanical and electronic CAD data files, process documents and software engineering information, and it offers PLM capabilities across several products. Organisations can run Windchill on-premises as a traditional, self-managed deployment, or use Windchill+, the cloud-based SaaS version from PTC.
PTC is a publicly listed company headquartered in Boston, Massachusetts, in the United States. Windchill is proprietary software and not open source. With an on-premises installation the customer decides where the system runs, for example in an EU data centre. With Windchill+ the platform runs in the cloud, and the public pages consulted do not state the data centre regions. Because PTC is a US company, US law such as the CLOUD Act can apply to data it controls, so a European organisation choosing the SaaS version should agree the hosting region and access arrangements in the contract.
