Q3 Software ERP: sovereignty score and 8 European alternatives

Q3 Software ERP is a business software suite from Q3 Software AG in Bern for small and medium-sized companies, associations, trustees and schools. It combines up to eight modules in one interface: addresses, orders and invoicing with stock, financial accounting, creditors, payments, payroll, time recording and absence planning. It comes in four feature tiers and runs on Windows as a single-user or multi-user installation; data can be exchanged in formats such as CSV and XML.

Q3 Software AG is based in Bern and describes itself as owner-managed; no parent group is named. The programs normally run on your own computers or network drive, so you keep control of the data. Optionally, the vendor operates a Q3 Cloud in a Microsoft data centre located in Switzerland, with daily automatic backups. Because Microsoft is a US company, European organisations may want to assess the exposure to US jurisdiction that this option brings. Switzerland is not in the EU but is an EFTA country with an EU adequacy decision.

Why digital sovereignty matters with Q3 Software ERP

Q3 Software ERP is headquartered in Switzerland and falls under Swiss law, including the revised Swiss data protection act. Switzerland is not an EU member, but the European Commission recognises its level of data protection as adequate. Its Swiss headquarters does not by itself bring it under US legislation such as the CLOUD Act.

Q3 Software ERP runs on infrastructure you choose and control yourself. You decide where the data lives, including fully within the EU if you want — this is not a fixed hosting choice made by the vendor.

Q3 Software ERP is closed source, but you run the software yourself on your own infrastructure. The encryption keys and the runtime therefore stay under your own control, though you cannot audit or modify the source code. Ask about export options and open standards to limit software-level lock-in.

What this means for your organisation depends on your whole stack and context. The free assessment weighs Q3 Software ERP together with your other vendors and gives a total score, a heatmap and the main risk drivers.
