ReportServer: sovereignty score and 8 European alternatives

ReportServer is an open-source business intelligence platform that bundles several reporting engines. It combines Eclipse BIRT, Jasper Reports, SAP Crystal Reports, script reports and Excel or Word templates with ad-hoc lists, self-service pivot tables and charts, and OLAP analysis through Mondrian and the Saiku interface. It also offers scheduled report runs with email delivery, dashboards that can be embedded via iFrame, permission control and an interface in more than 60 languages. Groovy scripting allows custom functions and data sources. The Community Edition is released under the aGPL; an Enterprise Edition adds features.

ReportServer is developed by InfoFabrik GmbH in Wiesbaden, Germany. The vendor states that it can be deployed within an organisation's own IT infrastructure and integrated with Active Directory or single sign-on. Because the Community Edition is open source and self-hostable, a European organisation can decide where data is processed and keep it under its own control, including within the EU. The vendor's site shows no non-EU parent company.

Why digital sovereignty matters with ReportServer

ReportServer is headquartered in DE and therefore falls under European law: the GDPR, NIS2 and the Data Act. No foreign legislation can compel access to your data.

Data is hosted exclusively in the EU, so ReportServer scores best on data residency.

ReportServer is open source. You can audit the source code, self-host the software and keep the encryption keys under your own control. Switching is easier because data and software are not tied to a single party.

What this means for your organisation depends on your whole stack and context. The free assessment weighs ReportServer together with your other vendors and gives a total score, a heatmap and the main risk drivers.
