Resend: sovereignty score and 8 European alternatives

Resend is an email platform for sending email through an API. It began in 2022 as an open source project for email templates, and the sending service followed in 2023. Besides transactional email, Resend offers Broadcasts, Audiences, Automations, Inbound, Templates, Webhooks and Dedicated IPs. The service is delivered as SaaS; the sending service itself is not open source. The team works fully remotely, and the company is funded by investors including Y Combinator, a16z and SV Angel.

Resend gives a mailing address in San Francisco, California. You can choose from four sending regions, including Ireland (eu-west-1). That choice only determines where emails are sent from; according to the documentation, all account data, including metadata, logs and API records, is stored in the United States regardless of region. For a European organisation this means a US vendor retains the data even when sending happens from the EU. Consult the sub-processor list and the privacy policy for details.

Why digital sovereignty matters with Resend

Resend is headquartered in the United States. US vendors fall under the CLOUD Act and FISA 702: US authorities can compel access to data, even when that data sits in a European data centre. That is the core of the jurisdictional exposure in our model.

Resend hosts data outside the EU (US). Personal data therefore leaves the EU, which requires a transfer mechanism under the GDPR and pulls the data residency score down.

Resend is closed source and hosted by the vendor. The encryption keys and the runtime sit with the vendor and switching requires data migration. Ask about bring-your-own-key, export options and open standards.

What this means for your organisation depends on your whole stack and context. The free assessment weighs Resend together with your other vendors and gives a total score, a heatmap and the main risk drivers.
