Robusta KRR: sovereignty score and 8 European alternatives

Robusta KRR (Kubernetes Resource Recommender) is an open-source command-line tool that reads pod usage data from Prometheus and recommends CPU and memory requests and limits for Kubernetes workloads. Teams use the output to correct over-provisioned or too tightly configured workloads and so reduce cost. The tool runs locally or as a Kubernetes Job in the cluster and queries the Prometheus-compatible endpoint you configure. It covers the recommendation function of commercial Kubernetes cost-management products.

KRR is MIT-licensed and maintained by Robusta Dev Ltd., in Tel Aviv, Israel. No owner has been identified. The tool itself needs no vendor cloud, so data stays within your infrastructure. Optional features do send data onward, such as reports to Slack, exports to Azure Blob Storage or the Robusta SaaS interface; according to the privacy policy, data there is processed in the United States and Europe. The privacy policy does not mention a GDPR data processing agreement. Check your configuration before enabling these options.

Why digital sovereignty matters with Robusta KRR

Robusta KRR is headquartered in IL, outside the EU. Contracts and data therefore also fall under non-European law. The GDPR applies through contractual terms, but in a conflict with local legislation you have less certainty than with a European vendor.

Robusta KRR hosts data in US, EU. Exactly what stays within the EU — and what does not — is defined by the vendor's data processing agreement and sub-processor list, not by a setting you control yourself; check those documents for the precise scope, including backups, logs and support access.

Robusta KRR is open source. You can audit the source code, self-host the software and keep the encryption keys under your own control. Switching is easier because data and software are not tied to a single party.

What this means for your organisation depends on your whole stack and context. The free assessment weighs Robusta KRR together with your other vendors and gives a total score, a heatmap and the main risk drivers.
