Sailfish Browser is the default browser of Sailfish OS, the Linux-based mobile operating system from the Finnish company Jolla. It is built on the Gecko engine and offers site permissions, a password manager, certificate information, saving pages as PDF and a restricted captive-portal mode. The system's email viewer uses the same engine. It is a local app on the device and needs no separate cloud service.
Jolla is based in Tampere, Finland, and therefore in the European Union. The browser's source code is public on GitHub under the Mozilla Public License 2.0. The operating system itself is offered under an exclusive licensing model in which licensees receive access to the full source code. Choosing Sailfish OS therefore means a platform from a European vendor. Where Android apps are run through the optional compatibility layer, the organisation still has to check for itself where those apps send their data.
