SeaTable: sovereignty score and 8 European alternatives

SeaTable is a platform that combines what a spreadsheet and a database offer, for building databases, workflows and apps in the browser. You work with linked tables and view data as gallery, kanban, timeline or calendar. It also provides a drag-and-drop app builder, automations and notifications, real-time collaboration, an API and a SQL interface. Integrations exist for Zapier, Make and n8n, along with an optional self-hosted AI server. SeaTable is available as SeaTable Cloud, hosted by the vendor, or as SeaTable Server on your own infrastructure.

SeaTable GmbH is based in Mainz, Germany. According to the website, SeaTable Cloud runs only in the EU, in German data centres. When self-hosting, you decide where the data resides. The community edition is partly open source: dtable-web, dtable-events and the thumbnail server are under Apache 2.0 and seaf-server under AGPLv3, while dtable-server carries a proprietary licence. For a European organisation this offers a German vendor with EU hosting and a self-hosting option.

Why digital sovereignty matters with SeaTable

SeaTable is headquartered in DE and therefore falls under European law: the GDPR, NIS2 and the Data Act. No foreign legislation can compel access to your data.

Data is hosted exclusively in the EU, so SeaTable scores best on data residency.

SeaTable is closed source and hosted by the vendor. The encryption keys and the runtime sit with the vendor and switching requires data migration. Ask about bring-your-own-key, export options and open standards.

What this means for your organisation depends on your whole stack and context. The free assessment weighs SeaTable together with your other vendors and gives a total score, a heatmap and the main risk drivers.
