SORBA: sovereignty score and 8 European alternatives

SORBA is business software for Swiss construction and trade companies, such as civil engineering, landscaping, painters and plasterers, roofing and timber construction. SORBA 360 covers project and address management, document management, quotes and invoicing including NPK specifications, time and daily-report recording, resource and fleet planning, and accounting with payroll, cost accounting and management information. Mobile apps record reports and hours on site. The software is sold as a subscription and can run locally, locally with secure remote access, in the vendor's cloud or on outsourced remote-desktop servers.

SORBA is made by SORBA EDV AG in St. Gallen, Switzerland. Since 2024 the company has belonged to the SYSTABUILD Software Group, a software group for construction and trades; SORBA says it remains independent. The website does not state how the group holds SORBA, so a foreign parent company cannot be confirmed. Switzerland is not an EU member but is an EFTA country with an EU adequacy decision. The cloud and outsourcing options keep data in a Swiss data centre; with a local installation, data stays on your own servers.

Why digital sovereignty matters with SORBA

SORBA is headquartered in Switzerland and falls under Swiss law, including the revised Swiss data protection act. Switzerland is not an EU member, but the European Commission recognises its level of data protection as adequate. Its Swiss headquarters does not by itself bring it under US legislation such as the CLOUD Act.

SORBA runs on infrastructure you choose and control yourself. You decide where the data lives, including fully within the EU if you want — this is not a fixed hosting choice made by the vendor.

SORBA is closed source, but you run the software yourself on your own infrastructure. The encryption keys and the runtime therefore stay under your own control, though you cannot audit or modify the source code. Ask about export options and open standards to limit software-level lock-in.

What this means for your organisation depends on your whole stack and context. The free assessment weighs SORBA together with your other vendors and gives a total score, a heatmap and the main risk drivers.
