Spin is an open-source framework for building and running serverless applications compiled to WebAssembly. Developers write components using language SDKs, and Spin runs them as HTTP and event-driven applications. It can run on a local machine, on self-managed servers, on Kubernetes or on cloud services that offer it. The project is a sandbox project of the Cloud Native Computing Foundation (CNCF).
Spin is released under the Apache 2.0 licence and is governed under the CNCF, a foundation with its seat in the United States. Spin is software that organisations run themselves, so data stays on the infrastructure they choose, for example a European provider or their own servers. Hosted Spin services are offered separately by other companies, so the choice of hosting determines which jurisdiction applies. A European organisation that runs Spin on European infrastructure keeps the function layer away from US-hosted serverless platforms.
