Spree Commerce: sovereignty score and 8 European alternatives

Spree Commerce is an open-source, headless e-commerce platform built on Ruby on Rails. Its back end provides the shop functions while the storefront is built separately, as an alternative to hosted platforms such as Shopify. The BSD-3-Clause code can be self-hosted with Docker on AWS, Google Cloud, Azure or in a company's own data centres. A sandbox is available for evaluation; no hosted service for production use is described.

The vendor's privacy notice names Vendo Connect Inc, a Delaware corporation, as operator of the sandbox and states that Vendo is established in the United States. Personal data is stored and processed in the US and in other countries where Vendo's affiliates and service providers operate, so a hosted service run by that entity is subject to US law. Because the code is open source, a European organisation can run its own instance on servers in the EU and keep customer data under its own control. The privacy notice names Vendo as a GDPR controller and does not mention a data processing agreement.

Why digital sovereignty matters with Spree Commerce

Spree Commerce is headquartered in the United States. US vendors fall under the CLOUD Act and FISA 702: US authorities can compel access to data, even when that data sits in a European data centre. That is the core of the jurisdictional exposure in our model.

Spree Commerce hosts data outside the EU (US, OTHER). Personal data therefore leaves the EU, which requires a transfer mechanism under the GDPR and pulls the data residency score down.

Spree Commerce is open source. You can audit the source code, self-host the software and keep the encryption keys under your own control. Switching is easier because data and software are not tied to a single party.

What this means for your organisation depends on your whole stack and context. The free assessment weighs Spree Commerce together with your other vendors and gives a total score, a heatmap and the main risk drivers.
