StarRocks is an open-source analytical database with a massively parallel processing (MPP) architecture, a vectorised execution engine and columnar storage that supports real-time updates. Organisations use it for real-time analytics, ad-hoc queries and querying data lakes without moving the data first. It speaks the MySQL wire protocol, so MySQL clients and common BI tools can connect. StarRocks is software that you deploy yourself, in shared-nothing or shared-data clusters.
StarRocks is licensed under Apache 2.0. Its original developer, CelerData, donated the project to the Linux Foundation in 2023, and the project site is operated by the StarRocks Project, a series of LF Projects, LLC. Because the code is open and you choose the infrastructure, you can run it in your own data centre or with a European cloud provider and keep control over data location and jurisdiction. A managed offering from a commercial vendor would add that vendor's own jurisdiction.
