Streamlit: sovereignty score and 8 European alternatives

Streamlit is an open-source framework that lets developers build and share data apps in pure Python, such as dashboards and interactive analyses. It is licensed under Apache 2.0 and can be run on your own infrastructure. Streamlit Community Cloud is a hosting option for public apps that requires a GitHub account, and a variant inside Snowflake exists for enterprise use.

Streamlit is owned by Snowflake Inc., a US company, and is governed by the Snowflake privacy notice. That notice states that Snowflake participates in the EU-US Data Privacy Framework, uses standard contractual clauses for transfers, and has a data protection officer and an EU representative. The Community Cloud documentation says the infrastructure runs in data centres of cloud providers but names neither provider nor region. Organisations that host the framework themselves keep data and code under their own control; using Community Cloud or Snowflake brings US jurisdiction and the CLOUD Act into play. European organisations can self-host the framework.

Why digital sovereignty matters with Streamlit

Streamlit is headquartered in the United States. US vendors fall under the CLOUD Act and FISA 702: US authorities can compel access to data, even when that data sits in a European data centre. That is the core of the jurisdictional exposure in our model.

Streamlit hosts data outside the EU (US). Personal data therefore leaves the EU, which requires a transfer mechanism under the GDPR and pulls the data residency score down.

Streamlit is open source. You can audit the source code, self-host the software and keep the encryption keys under your own control. Switching is easier because data and software are not tied to a single party.

What this means for your organisation depends on your whole stack and context. The free assessment weighs Streamlit together with your other vendors and gives a total score, a heatmap and the main risk drivers.
