Synfig Studio: sovereignty score and 8 European alternatives

Synfig Studio is a free 2D animation program for Windows, Linux and macOS. It works with vector and bitmap artwork, so you can produce animation without drawing every individual frame by hand. It is aimed at illustrators and small production teams who make cartoons, motion graphics or explainer videos. Synfig is installed as a desktop application and used locally.

Synfig is free software under the GNU GPL v3, and its source code is on GitHub. The project has no named foundation or company as its owner; it is carried by a community of developers, and donations go to the development team. According to its privacy policy, the synfig.org website is operated by a sole proprietorship in the Russian Federation, which is why Russia is taken as its country of establishment. Because you install the program yourself, your project files stay on your own systems. The project offers no hosted service. It is still actively maintained: the website announces new releases in 2026.

Why digital sovereignty matters with Synfig Studio

Synfig Studio is headquartered in RU, outside the EU. Contracts and data therefore also fall under non-European law. The GDPR applies through contractual terms, but in a conflict with local legislation you have less certainty than with a European vendor.

Synfig Studio hosts data outside the EU (OTHER). Personal data therefore leaves the EU, which requires a transfer mechanism under the GDPR and pulls the data residency score down.

Synfig Studio is open source. You can audit the source code, self-host the software and keep the encryption keys under your own control. Switching is easier because data and software are not tied to a single party.

What this means for your organisation depends on your whole stack and context. The free assessment weighs Synfig Studio together with your other vendors and gives a total score, a heatmap and the main risk drivers.
