Tarsnap: sovereignty score and 8 European alternatives

Tarsnap is an encrypted online backup service for Unix-like systems such as Linux, FreeBSD and macOS. Backups are made with a command-line client that deduplicates and encrypts data with keys that only the user holds; the encrypted archives are then sent to the service. It is run by Tarsnap Backup Inc., which stores the archives on Amazon S3, with the server running on Amazon EC2.

Tarsnap Backup Inc. was incorporated in British Columbia, Canada, in 2011, and the service was created by its founder. Canada lies outside the EU and the EEA. The public pages do not name the AWS region where data is stored and do not mention a GDPR data processing agreement. The client code is available, but it is not distributed under an open-source licence. European organisations should weigh the AWS infrastructure, whose region is not named, against the benefit of encryption on the client side.

Why digital sovereignty matters with Tarsnap

Tarsnap is headquartered in CA, outside the EU. Contracts and data therefore also fall under non-European law. The GDPR applies through contractual terms, but in a conflict with local legislation you have less certainty than with a European vendor.

Tarsnap hosts data outside the EU (OTHER). Personal data therefore leaves the EU, which requires a transfer mechanism under the GDPR and pulls the data residency score down.

Tarsnap is closed source and hosted by the vendor. The encryption keys and the runtime sit with the vendor and switching requires data migration. Ask about bring-your-own-key, export options and open standards.

What this means for your organisation depends on your whole stack and context. The free assessment weighs Tarsnap together with your other vendors and gives a total score, a heatmap and the main risk drivers.
