Trados (RWS): sovereignty score and 8 European alternatives

Trados is the translation technology product family from RWS. Its best-known product, Trados Studio, is a Windows desktop application in which translators edit and review translations, manage projects, organise terminology and use machine translation. Studio can run locally or work through the RWS Language Cloud. The Trados name goes back to a German language-service provider founded in 1984; after SDL merged with RWS in November 2020, the software reverted to the name Trados Studio. It is intended for professional translators, agencies and organisations with translation workflows.

RWS Group is headquartered in Maidenhead in the United Kingdom, and its parent is RWS Holdings plc. According to the Trados website, the platform is available in two hosting regions, EU (Frankfurt) and Canada, and runs on AWS. The United Kingdom is not an EU member state, and the infrastructure runs on a US cloud provider. The software is not open source.

Why digital sovereignty matters with Trados (RWS)

Trados (RWS) is headquartered in GB, outside the EU. Contracts and data therefore also fall under non-European law. The GDPR applies through contractual terms, but in a conflict with local legislation you have less certainty than with a European vendor.

Data is hosted exclusively in the EU, so Trados (RWS) scores best on data residency.

Trados (RWS) is closed source and hosted by the vendor. The encryption keys and the runtime sit with the vendor and switching requires data migration. Ask about bring-your-own-key, export options and open standards.

What this means for your organisation depends on your whole stack and context. The free assessment weighs Trados (RWS) together with your other vendors and gives a total score, a heatmap and the main risk drivers.
