TruSpace: sovereignty score and 8 European alternatives

TruSpace is a decentralised document workspace for organisations that collaborate with partners without entrusting their documents to a cloud provider. Each participant runs its own node; documents, versions and metadata are synchronised peer to peer over IPFS and IPFS Cluster. Workspaces organise content and participants across institutional boundaries. Optionally, a local language model (Ollama with Open WebUI) helps interpret documents; according to the documentation, the content is not sent to an external API in the process. The web interface is built with TypeScript and Next.js and starts via Docker.

TruSpace is published by openKfW, the open-source programme of KfW Bankengruppe in Frankfurt am Main, Germany, a public-law institution. The source code is available under the GPL-3.0-or-later on OpenCoDE and GitHub. The software is meant to be run by the organisation itself: no cloud account is needed, the IPFS network can be set up as a private network, and the README states that documents are encrypted per workspace. An online sandbox is intended as a demo only.

Why digital sovereignty matters with TruSpace

TruSpace is headquartered in DE and therefore falls under European law: the GDPR, NIS2 and the Data Act. No foreign legislation can compel access to your data.

Data is hosted exclusively in the EU, so TruSpace scores best on data residency.

TruSpace is open source. You can audit the source code, self-host the software and keep the encryption keys under your own control. Switching is easier because data and software are not tied to a single party.

What this means for your organisation depends on your whole stack and context. The free assessment weighs TruSpace together with your other vendors and gives a total score, a heatmap and the main risk drivers.
