Tuxedo OS: sovereignty score and 8 European alternatives

TUXEDO OS is the own Linux distribution of TUXEDO Computers GmbH, a German manufacturer of desktops and laptops with pre-installed Linux. The system is based on Ubuntu (Kubuntu) and uses the KDE Plasma desktop. It omits Snap and ships with pre-installed, tested drivers, including the proprietary NVIDIA driver, so manual driver installation is usually unnecessary. TUXEDO OS is optimised for TUXEDO hardware but also runs on many PCs from other brands. According to the manufacturer, Secure Boot must be disabled. In July 2026 the company announced that it would move the base from Ubuntu to Debian testing.

TUXEDO Computers is based in Augsburg, Germany. The source code of TUXEDO's drivers and software is publicly available, and the company says it works almost exclusively with free and open-source software. According to Wikipedia, its software repositories are hosted in Germany. For a European organisation this combines a European hardware and software supplier with a system that you install and manage on your own devices.

Why digital sovereignty matters with Tuxedo OS

Tuxedo OS is headquartered in DE and therefore falls under European law: the GDPR, NIS2 and the Data Act. No foreign legislation can compel access to your data.

Data is hosted exclusively in the EU, so Tuxedo OS scores best on data residency.

Tuxedo OS is open source. You can audit the source code, self-host the software and keep the encryption keys under your own control. Switching is easier because data and software are not tied to a single party.

What this means for your organisation depends on your whole stack and context. The free assessment weighs Tuxedo OS together with your other vendors and gives a total score, a heatmap and the main risk drivers.
