TWINT: sovereignty score and 8 European alternatives

TWINT is the Swiss mobile payment system. Users link the app to their bank account or credit card, or use a prepaid balance, and pay at checkouts, parking meters, vending machines and online shops, or send money to other users. To pay, the customer scans a QR code with the app; NFC is not required. Merchants accept payments via card terminals, a computer or QR stickers for small sellers, and online shops connect TWINT through payment service providers or plug-ins.

TWINT AG is based in Zurich. According to German-language Wikipedia, its shareholders include Swiss banks (BCV, Raiffeisen, UBS and Zürcher Kantonalbank), SIX, PostFinance and the French payments group Worldline with 20 percent; Switzerland belongs to EFTA, not the EU. No US parent company is mentioned. The sources do not say where data is stored, so a European organisation should ask the provider. TWINT is a commercial service and is not open source.

Why digital sovereignty matters with TWINT

TWINT is headquartered in Switzerland and falls under Swiss law, including the revised Swiss data protection act. Switzerland is not an EU member, but the European Commission recognises its level of data protection as adequate. Its Swiss headquarters does not by itself bring it under US legislation such as the CLOUD Act.

TWINT hosts data in the EU and in Switzerland. Switzerland is covered by a European Commission adequacy decision, so personal data can go there without extra safeguards. If you require strictly EU hosting, check the data processing agreement for which data is stored in Switzerland.

TWINT is closed source and hosted by the vendor. The encryption keys and the runtime sit with the vendor and switching requires data migration. Ask about bring-your-own-key, export options and open standards.

What this means for your organisation depends on your whole stack and context. The free assessment weighs TWINT together with your other vendors and gives a total score, a heatmap and the main risk drivers.
