Typst is a markup-based typesetting system for documents such as reports, theses, invoices and CVs, and is often presented as an alternative to LaTeX for scientific and technical texts. The open-source compiler turns Typst markup into PDF, image or web output and can run from the command line on the user's own computer. A browser-based web app lets people edit and preview projects together.
The developer is Typst GmbH, a company based in Berlin. The compiler is licensed under Apache-2.0, so organisations can compile documents entirely on their own systems. The hosted web app is proprietary. According to its privacy page, uploaded project files are stored only in Microsoft Azure data centres within the EU, while the same page names US subprocessors for email, payments and opt-in telemetry, which a European organisation should review. Because the company is European and the core software is free, Typst suits teams that prefer local compilation.
