Uberspace: sovereignty score and 8 European alternatives

Uberspace is a web hosting service that gives customers shell access over SSH and SFTP on Linux servers, for hosting websites, mail, git repositories and their own web services. The manual covers languages such as PHP, Python, Node.js and Ruby, and databases such as MySQL and PostgreSQL. Customers pay what they consider fair: there is no minimum term or subscription and the first month is free.

Uberspace has operated since 2010. It is a small, owner-managed company, formally a sole proprietorship with its address in Mainz, Germany. Uberspace says it is not backed by a startup investor or a global corporation and that it owns and maintains its server hardware itself instead of relying on outside cloud providers. The pages consulted do not state where the data centre is located, so a European organisation should confirm the server location with the provider.

Why digital sovereignty matters with Uberspace

Uberspace is headquartered in DE and therefore falls under European law: the GDPR, NIS2 and the Data Act. No foreign legislation can compel access to your data.

Data is hosted exclusively in the EU, so Uberspace scores best on data residency.

Uberspace is closed source and hosted by the vendor. The encryption keys and the runtime sit with the vendor and switching requires data migration. Ask about bring-your-own-key, export options and open standards.

What this means for your organisation depends on your whole stack and context. The free assessment weighs Uberspace together with your other vendors and gives a total score, a heatmap and the main risk drivers.
