UniGetUI: sovereignty score and 8 European alternatives

UniGetUI is a graphical interface for command-line package managers. From a single window you can find, install, update and remove software through WinGet, Scoop and Chocolatey on Windows, Homebrew on macOS, and APT, DNF or Flatpak on Linux, among others. It is Windows-first, with builds for macOS and Linux. It also offers scheduled maintenance, local backups of your package list, a command-line interface and a portable mode. It is installed as a desktop application on your own computer.

UniGetUI was created by an individual developer and has been maintained since March 2026 by Devolutions, a software company that states it is located in Canada. The source code is published on GitHub under the MIT licence; Devolutions says the project remains free, open source and community-driven. The app runs locally. The README describes no telemetry, but does not state its absence either. As an option you can sync backups to a secret GitHub Gist, which sends data off your device.

Why digital sovereignty matters with UniGetUI

UniGetUI is headquartered in CA, outside the EU. Contracts and data therefore also fall under non-European law. The GDPR applies through contractual terms, but in a conflict with local legislation you have less certainty than with a European vendor.

UniGetUI hosts data outside the EU (OTHER). Personal data therefore leaves the EU, which requires a transfer mechanism under the GDPR and pulls the data residency score down.

UniGetUI is open source. You can audit the source code, self-host the software and keep the encryption keys under your own control. Switching is easier because data and software are not tied to a single party.

What this means for your organisation depends on your whole stack and context. The free assessment weighs UniGetUI together with your other vendors and gives a total score, a heatmap and the main risk drivers.
