Unzer: sovereignty score and 8 European alternatives

Unzer is a payment provider that gives merchants a single platform for online and in-person payments. Its offering covers payment methods for online shops, buy now pay later (invoice, instalments and direct debit), risk management, payment terminals and point-of-sale systems, including for hospitality. Online shops connect through a preconfigured payment page, SDKs, a REST API or plug-ins for shop platforms. Unzer focuses on the DACH region and says it serves customers across Europe.

Unzer, formerly Heidelpay, is a German company; according to a 2022 report its headquarters moved from Heidelberg to Berlin. The investment firm KKR has held a majority stake since 2019. In 2023 media reported that KKR would hand majority control to creditors (Alcentra, Goldman Sachs Asset Management and Partners Group); the sources do not confirm completion. They do not say where data is stored, so a European organisation should ask the provider. Unzer is a commercial service and is not open source.

Why digital sovereignty matters with Unzer

Unzer is headquartered in DE and therefore falls under European law: the GDPR, NIS2 and the Data Act. No foreign legislation can compel access to your data.

Data is hosted exclusively in the EU, so Unzer scores best on data residency.

Unzer is closed source and hosted by the vendor. The encryption keys and the runtime sit with the vendor and switching requires data migration. Ask about bring-your-own-key, export options and open standards.

What this means for your organisation depends on your whole stack and context. The free assessment weighs Unzer together with your other vendors and gives a total score, a heatmap and the main risk drivers.
