Veriff: sovereignty score and 8 European alternatives

Veriff provides identity verification and fraud prevention as a service. Its offering covers identity document and biometric verification with liveness checks, face-based authentication, age estimation, AML screening, proof of address, database and business verification, and fraud intelligence. Organisations integrate it through web and mobile SDKs for iOS, Android and the web, or through APIs with webhooks, and can chain checks in workflows managed through a customer portal. According to Veriff, its core models are built in-house.

Veriff contracts through different entities, including Veriff OÜ, an Estonian company; the Estonian Data Protection Inspectorate is its lead supervisory authority. Its privacy notice states that transfers outside the data subject's country rely, among other mechanisms, on standard contractual clauses approved by the European Commission, and that data held abroad may be subject to disclosure to authorities there. Veriff lists SOC 2 Type II and ISO/IEC 27001:2022 among its certifications. The privacy notice does not state where data is stored, so obtain the current sub-processor list and hosting regions before signing.

Why digital sovereignty matters with Veriff

Veriff is headquartered in EE and therefore falls under European law: the GDPR, NIS2 and the Data Act. No foreign legislation can compel access to your data.

Data is hosted exclusively in the EU, so Veriff scores best on data residency.

Veriff is closed source and hosted by the vendor. The encryption keys and the runtime sit with the vendor and switching requires data migration. Ask about bring-your-own-key, export options and open standards.

What this means for your organisation depends on your whole stack and context. The free assessment weighs Veriff together with your other vendors and gives a total score, a heatmap and the main risk drivers.
