Vertec: sovereignty score and 8 European alternatives

Vertec is integrated business software for project- and mandate-oriented service firms. It combines CRM, project calculation, time and service recording, invoicing and controlling in one system, together with document management. Vertec offers industry configurations for law firms, consultants, engineers, IT service providers, software makers and fiduciaries, and can be extended through integrations and an AI app for customers. Organisations can run it on their own infrastructure (on-premises) or take the vendor's cloud subscription.

Vertec AG is headquartered in Zürich, Switzerland, with subsidiaries in Germany and Austria. Switzerland is not in the EU but is an EFTA country with an EU adequacy decision. According to the vendor, the cloud subscription runs on European infrastructure providers: Exoscale for Switzerland, Germany and Austria, and UpCloud (Helsinki) for the Netherlands, with encrypted backups at cloudscale.ch and IONOS. Optional services use Microsoft Azure (AI-based receipt recognition) and Mailgun, a US company (e-mail delivery); customers can switch both off. The on-premises option keeps all data on your own systems.

Why digital sovereignty matters with Vertec

Vertec is headquartered in Switzerland and falls under Swiss law, including the revised Swiss data protection act. Switzerland is not an EU member, but the European Commission recognises its level of data protection as adequate. Its Swiss headquarters does not by itself bring it under US legislation such as the CLOUD Act.

Vertec runs on infrastructure you choose and control yourself. You decide where the data lives, including fully within the EU if you want — this is not a fixed hosting choice made by the vendor.

Vertec is closed source, but you run the software yourself on your own infrastructure. The encryption keys and the runtime therefore stay under your own control, though you cannot audit or modify the source code. Ask about export options and open standards to limit software-level lock-in.

What this means for your organisation depends on your whole stack and context. The free assessment weighs Vertec together with your other vendors and gives a total score, a heatmap and the main risk drivers.
