Wazuh: sovereignty score and 8 European alternatives

Wazuh is a free, open source platform for threat prevention, detection and response, with unified XDR and SIEM capabilities. An agent on monitored systems collects data, a management server analyses it, an indexer makes it searchable and a web interface presents the results. The platform covers log analysis, file integrity monitoring, vulnerability detection, configuration assessment, incident response and container and cloud security. You install Wazuh yourself, on premises or in the cloud, or use the managed service Wazuh Cloud.

Wazuh, Inc. is a US company, based in San Jose, California according to CB Insights. The software is based on OSSEC and is licensed under GPLv2. With Wazuh Cloud you choose a region when you create an environment, and that choice is permanent. Frankfurt and London are available in Europe, alongside regions in North America and Asia Pacific. Because the provider is American, US jurisdiction, such as the CLOUD Act, may be relevant for the managed service. When you self-host on your own or European infrastructure, the data stays entirely under your control.

Why digital sovereignty matters with Wazuh

Wazuh is headquartered in the United States. US vendors fall under the CLOUD Act and FISA 702: US authorities can compel access to data, even when that data sits in a European data centre. That is the core of the jurisdictional exposure in our model.

Wazuh hosts data in EU, US. Exactly what stays within the EU — and what does not — is defined by the vendor's data processing agreement and sub-processor list, not by a setting you control yourself; check those documents for the precise scope, including backups, logs and support access.

Wazuh is open source. You can audit the source code, self-host the software and keep the encryption keys under your own control. Switching is easier because data and software are not tied to a single party.

What this means for your organisation depends on your whole stack and context. The free assessment weighs Wazuh together with your other vendors and gives a total score, a heatmap and the main risk drivers.
