YunoHost: sovereignty score and 8 European alternatives

YunoHost is an open-source server operating system that aims to make administering your own server as simple as possible. It installs on an ARM board such as a Raspberry Pi, an old computer or a virtual server. Through a web admin interface and a single sign-on portal, you install applications from a catalogue, for example for email, calendars and contacts, file sharing, websites and team chat. This lets small organisations, associations and individuals run their own services.

According to its website, YunoHost is developed and maintained by volunteers as a non-profit project. Donations are handled by the association Support Self-Hosting. The project names NLnet and the European Next Generation Internet programme among its funders, alongside sponsors that provide infrastructure. The core is released under the AGPL-3.0 licence. Because you install YunoHost yourself, you decide where the data lives. YunoHost is listed in the French SILL, the government's list of recommended free software.

Why digital sovereignty matters with YunoHost

YunoHost is headquartered in EU and therefore falls under European law: the GDPR, NIS2 and the Data Act. No foreign legislation can compel access to your data.

Data is hosted exclusively in the EU, so YunoHost scores best on data residency.

YunoHost is open source. You can audit the source code, self-host the software and keep the encryption keys under your own control. Switching is easier because data and software are not tied to a single party.

What this means for your organisation depends on your whole stack and context. The free assessment weighs YunoHost together with your other vendors and gives a total score, a heatmap and the main risk drivers.
