ZetaOffice: sovereignty score and 8 European alternatives

ZetaOffice is an office suite built on LibreOffice that runs in the browser and as a desktop application. It offers a word processor (Writer), spreadsheets (Calc) and presentations (Impress), and suits organisations that want to embed document editing or generation in their own systems. A JavaScript wrapper called zetajs lets developers control the suite in the browser. Desktop builds exist for Linux and Windows. The site describes the desktop builds and paid services as beta, and an earlier NLnet grant under the NGI Zero programme supported work on encrypted collaborative editing.

ZetaOffice was developed by allotropia in Hamburg. Since a merger announced in May 2025 the company belongs to Collabora Productivity, a UK company, and the legal notice on the allotropia site now names Collabora Productivity Germany GmbH. ZetaOffice is open source and the zetajs wrapper is under the MIT licence. You can self-host it or use the vendor's CDN, part of the paid packages; the site does not say where that CDN is hosted.

Why digital sovereignty matters with ZetaOffice

ZetaOffice is headquartered in GB, outside the EU. Contracts and data therefore also fall under non-European law. The GDPR applies through contractual terms, but in a conflict with local legislation you have less certainty than with a European vendor.

ZetaOffice hosts data outside the EU (OTHER). Personal data therefore leaves the EU, which requires a transfer mechanism under the GDPR and pulls the data residency score down.

ZetaOffice is open source. You can audit the source code, self-host the software and keep the encryption keys under your own control. Switching is easier because data and software are not tied to a single party.

What this means for your organisation depends on your whole stack and context. The free assessment weighs ZetaOffice together with your other vendors and gives a total score, a heatmap and the main risk drivers.
