Airtable: sovereignty score and 8 European alternatives

Airtable is a platform for building business applications and workflows on shared data, a hybrid of spreadsheet and database. Teams work with linked tables, custom interfaces, automations and reporting, and can give external guests access through portals. Airtable also offers AI features and AI agents, and integrations with tools such as Slack, Google Drive, Salesforce, Jira and Zendesk. The product is available as a web application with desktop and mobile apps; developers use the API, extensions and scripting.

Airtable is headquartered in San Francisco, California. Since 4 September 2026 it has been wholly owned by Bending Spoons, a Milan-based S.p.A. listed on Nasdaq since 1 July 2026. Customers on the Enterprise Scale plan can enable data residency and choose the United States (the default), Europe or Australia. Base content, attachments and revision history are then stored in the chosen region, while base metadata, workspace names and user and authentication data remain in US data centers. The software is not open source.

Why digital sovereignty matters with Airtable

Airtable is headquartered in the United States. US vendors fall under the CLOUD Act and FISA 702: US authorities can compel access to data, even when that data sits in a European data centre. That is the core of the jurisdictional exposure in our model. The ultimate owner is based in IT, also within Europe.

Airtable hosts data in US, EU. Exactly what stays within the EU — and what does not — is defined by the vendor's data processing agreement and sub-processor list, not by a setting you control yourself; check those documents for the precise scope, including backups, logs and support access.

Airtable is closed source and hosted by the vendor. The encryption keys and the runtime sit with the vendor and switching requires data migration. Ask about bring-your-own-key, export options and open standards.

What this means for your organisation depends on your whole stack and context. The free assessment weighs Airtable together with your other vendors and gives a total score, a heatmap and the main risk drivers.
