Amap (AutoNavi): sovereignty score and 8 European alternatives

Amap, known in Chinese as Gaode Map, is a Chinese web mapping, navigation and location-based services provider. It is offered at Amap.com and as a mobile app, with nearby search and route planning. The company, also called AutoNavi, launched its first in-house car navigation system in 2007 and has supplied mapping data for China to other services, including Apple Maps. An English version of the app for Android, iOS and HarmonyOS was released in January 2025 for overseas users. Amap is a consumer service delivered as a website and app, and it is not open source.

Amap is headquartered in Beijing, China. Alibaba Group acquired the company in 2014, and since 2021 Amap has been part of Alibaba's Lifestyle Services division, so its ultimate parent is Chinese. A 2026 investigation, as cited by Wikipedia, reported that the app regularly sends user location data to servers in China. A European organisation should take this jurisdiction and data flow into account before using Amap or its services for anything involving staff, customer or location data.

Why digital sovereignty matters with Amap (AutoNavi)

Amap (AutoNavi) is headquartered in CN, outside the EU. Contracts and data therefore also fall under non-European law. The GDPR applies through contractual terms, but in a conflict with local legislation you have less certainty than with a European vendor.

Amap (AutoNavi) hosts data in EU, OTHER. Exactly what stays within the EU — and what does not — is defined by the vendor's data processing agreement and sub-processor list, not by a setting you control yourself; check those documents for the precise scope, including backups, logs and support access.

Amap (AutoNavi) is closed source and hosted by the vendor. The encryption keys and the runtime sit with the vendor and switching requires data migration. Ask about bring-your-own-key, export options and open standards.

What this means for your organisation depends on your whole stack and context. The free assessment weighs Amap (AutoNavi) together with your other vendors and gives a total score, a heatmap and the main risk drivers.
