Amazon Neptune is a managed graph database service from Amazon Web Services (AWS) for highly connected data. The service is serverless: AWS handles scaling of graph workloads, automated backups, point-in-time recovery and cross-Region replication. According to AWS, Neptune supports GraphRAG together with Amazon Bedrock Knowledge Bases. Organisations use graph databases for purposes such as knowledge graphs and analysing relationships between data. Neptune is offered only as a cloud service within AWS; there is no self-hostable edition and the software is not open source.
AWS is a subsidiary of Amazon, which is based in the United States, so US legislation such as the CLOUD Act can apply. Customers choose the AWS Region in which their data is stored, and Neptune is available in several European Regions. AWS offers a Data Processing Addendum under which the Standard Contractual Clauses apply automatically to transfers to third countries. Anyone aiming to stay outside US jurisdiction should weigh the strong coupling to the AWS ecosystem.
