Apache Cloudberry is an open-source massively parallel processing (MPP) database that can serve as a data warehouse for large-scale analytics and AI or machine-learning workloads. It is derived from the open-source version of Greenplum Database and built on a modern PostgreSQL kernel, and it keeps operational compatibility with Greenplum so that existing users can migrate with familiar tooling. The software is released under the Apache License 2.0 and runs on standard hardware, virtual machines or in the cloud.
The project is developed under the Apache Software Foundation, a US 501(c)(3) non-profit, and is currently in incubation. Cloudberry states that it is not affiliated with Broadcom, which holds the Greenplum trademark, and it offers an open alternative to commercial Greenplum and other proprietary MPP warehouses. Because the database is installed and operated by the user, the location of data follows the deployment the organisation chooses. For a European buyer, the main questions are who operates the cluster and where its storage and backups are kept.
