Apache Iceberg: sovereignty score and 8 European alternatives

Apache Iceberg is an open table format for very large analytic tables on data lakes. It brings the reliability and simplicity of SQL tables to big data: you can merge, update and selectively delete rows, add, rename or reorder columns without rewriting the table, and use time travel to read or roll back to earlier versions. Iceberg is a specification with libraries (including for Java, Python, Rust and Go), not a hosted service.

Iceberg started at Netflix in 2017, was donated to the Apache Software Foundation, a US non-profit organisation, in late 2018, and has been a top-level project since May 2020 under the Apache License 2.0. You run Iceberg yourself on storage of your choice, in your own data centre or with a European provider, so you decide where your data resides. The open format limits lock-in and makes it possible to switch query engine or supplier.

Why digital sovereignty matters with Apache Iceberg

Apache Iceberg is headquartered in the United States. US vendors fall under the CLOUD Act and FISA 702: US authorities can compel access to data, even when that data sits in a European data centre. That is the core of the jurisdictional exposure in our model.

Apache Iceberg hosts data outside the EU (self-hosted). Personal data therefore leaves the EU, which requires a transfer mechanism under the GDPR and pulls the data residency score down.

Apache Iceberg is open source. You can audit the source code, self-host the software and keep the encryption keys under your own control. Switching is easier because data and software are not tied to a single party.

What this means for your organisation depends on your whole stack and context. The free assessment weighs Apache Iceberg together with your other vendors and gives a total score, a heatmap and the main risk drivers.
