Apache Ignite is an open-source distributed database that keeps data in memory and can persist it to disk. It offers ACID transactions, SQL and key-value access, schema evolution, and compute that runs where the data is stored. Client libraries exist for Java, .NET, C++, Python and SQL/CLI. The project describes it as a database for high-velocity applications that need in-memory performance, usually run as a cluster that applications connect to.
Apache Ignite is a project of the Apache Software Foundation, based in the United States, and is released under the Apache 2.0 licence. The project does not operate a hosted service that stores customer data, so the location of the data is decided by the organisation running the cluster, on its own servers or with a European cloud provider. A European organisation can therefore keep control over where its data resides. Governance of the project itself, however, sits with a US foundation.
