Apache Impala is an open-source analytic database that queries data stored in the Hadoop ecosystem and in open table formats such as Apache Iceberg. The project describes it as a native analytic database for open data and table formats, aimed at business-intelligence-style queries over large data sets. It is delivered as software that the organisation installs and operates on its own infrastructure, and it is licensed under the Apache License 2.0.
Impala is maintained by the Apache Software Foundation, a U.S. 501(c)(3) charitable organisation, and has no commercial owner or foreign parent company. For a European organisation, the sovereignty question is therefore mainly where the platform runs: an Impala deployment on servers in an EU data centre keeps query data under the organisation's own control. Commercial distributions and cloud services built on Impala come from separate vendors, and their ownership and hosting terms need to be assessed individually.
