Apache Ozone is an open-source distributed storage system for large volumes of data. It offers S3-compatible object storage alongside file-system interfaces for the Hadoop ecosystem, aimed at data analytics and object-store workloads. Organisations run it on their own servers or cloud accounts, for example with Docker. The software is released under the Apache License, Version 2.0 and maintained within the Apache Software Foundation.
The Apache Software Foundation is a US non-profit organisation. The project site describes no managed service that stores customer data, so the operator of an installation decides where the data is kept and who can access it. For a European organisation, Ozone is therefore an option for replacing US hyperscale object storage where data must stay under European control. Hardware, operations and any commercial support have to be sourced separately from a provider of the organisation's choice.
