Apache Superset: sovereignty score and 8 European alternatives

Apache Superset is an open-source platform for data exploration and visualisation. Users build charts and dashboards by drag and drop or with SQL, using more than forty built-in visualisation types, cross-filters, drill-to-detail, caching and a lightweight semantic layer. Superset connects to almost any SQL-based database, from PostgreSQL and MySQL to ClickHouse, Snowflake and Trino, and supports sign-in through OpenID, LDAP and OAuth. You install it yourself on your own infrastructure.

The project started at Airbnb and has been a top-level project of the Apache Software Foundation since 2021, a US non-profit organisation (501(c)(3)). The software is licensed under the Apache License 2.0. Because you host Superset yourself, you decide where your data resides, for example in a European data centre, without a commercial vendor in between. A hosted SaaS version is offered by the company Preset, which was founded by Superset's creator.

Why digital sovereignty matters with Apache Superset

Apache Superset is headquartered in the United States. US vendors fall under the CLOUD Act and FISA 702: US authorities can compel access to data, even when that data sits in a European data centre. That is the core of the jurisdictional exposure in our model.

Data is hosted exclusively in the EU, so Apache Superset scores best on data residency.

Apache Superset is open source. You can audit the source code, self-host the software and keep the encryption keys under your own control. Switching is easier because data and software are not tied to a single party.

What this means for your organisation depends on your whole stack and context. The free assessment weighs Apache Superset together with your other vendors and gives a total score, a heatmap and the main risk drivers.
