Apple Freeform: sovereignty score and 8 European alternatives

Freeform is Apple's whiteboard app for Mac, iPad and iPhone. On a flexible board you gather photos, shapes, sticky notes and other content to visualise ideas. You can invite others to a board and work on it together in real time. Boards stored in iCloud sync across your Apple devices when you are signed in with the same Apple Account. Freeform is offered as an Apple app with iCloud storage; no self-hosted variant is described.

Apple Inc. is a US company, so data is subject to US jurisdiction, including the CLOUD Act. With standard iCloud data protection, Freeform data is encrypted in transit and on the server, but Apple holds the keys. With Advanced Data Protection, the data is end-to-end encrypted and the keys stay on your trusted devices; for shared boards this applies only when all participants have it enabled. A board shared through an active sharing link is stored unencrypted while that link remains active.

Why digital sovereignty matters with Apple Freeform

Apple Freeform is headquartered in the United States. US vendors fall under the CLOUD Act and FISA 702: US authorities can compel access to data, even when that data sits in a European data centre. That is the core of the jurisdictional exposure in our model.

Apple Freeform hosts data outside the EU (US). Personal data therefore leaves the EU, which requires a transfer mechanism under the GDPR and pulls the data residency score down.

Apple Freeform is closed source and hosted by the vendor. The encryption keys and the runtime sit with the vendor and switching requires data migration. Ask about bring-your-own-key, export options and open standards.

What this means for your organisation depends on your whole stack and context. The free assessment weighs Apple Freeform together with your other vendors and gives a total score, a heatmap and the main risk drivers.
